What You’ll Learn

  • Learn challenges of doing performance analysis and capacity planning in the cloud and data center.
  • Hear about some of the mistakes (some are surprises) that can be avoided when dealing with cloud performance issues.

Abstract

In handling the largest online shopping event in the world, the emergence of large-scale software deployments in the data center has led to many challenges. We will cover two of them: (1) evaluating and estimating software performance at scale, and (2) optimizing software for resource management. This presentation addresses the two challenges by bringing the knowledge of software performance monitoring in the data center to the world of applying performance analytics. We will describe how effective decisions can be made in a case study.

Question:

What is the motivation for this talk?

Answer:

As more and more applications are running in the cloud and the data center, this talk would describe the challenges of doing performance analysis and a few mistakes to avoid. Basic to intermediate knowledge of software performance is required. Some knowledge of typical performance tools run on the servers.

Question:

What technology problem keeps you up at night?

Answer:

Misunderstanding of the system performance data. Drawing the wrong conclusion from the analysis.
